Mr. Michael Hui is Hong
Kong’s legendary comedy icon and acclaimed filmmaker. His
trademark poker-face humor, slapstick performances are widely
considered to be among the most innovative and important work in the
history of Chinese cinema.
From 1968-1972, Mr. Hui
created the “Hui Brothers’ Show” (1971) – a variety comedy TV show -
alongside with his younger brother Sam Hui, gained vast popularity
in Hong Kong. The Huis then moved on from television to film.
Mr. Hui’s debute movie “The Warlord” (1972) became No. 1 box-office
hit in Hong Kong that year.
From 1974-1981, Mr. Hui
wrote, directed and acted in a string of blockbuster hits which all
topped box office records across Southeast Asia. Among them,
“Games Gamblers Play” (1974), “The Private Eyes” (1976) and
“Securities Unlimited” (1981) all held the then-No. 1 grossing film
of all-time in Hong Kong cinema history. He was nicknamed “Mr.
Boo” in Japan. “Securities Unlimited” earned Mr. Hui Hong Kong
Film Academy’s Best Actor Award in 1982.
From the mid 80s, Mr. Hui
invested and produced a series of award- winning comedies such as
“Chicken and Duck Talk” (1988) from which Mr. Hui was awarded Best
Performance Actor by The American Film Institute. “Front
Page” (1990) earned him Best Actor by Hong Kong Artistes Guild.
His performance in “The Magic Touch” (1992) earned him Outstanding
Actor Award by The Chicago Art Institute. Then again, “Always
on My Mind” (1994) was named Top Asian Film of the Year in Tokyo and
Top 5 movies in Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Film Academy.
From the mid 90s to date,
Mr. Hui has been focusing on screenwriting, stand-up comedy
performances and a list of community services.
Mr. Hui is the Honorary
President of the Hong Kong Performing Artistes’ Guild for Life. He
has served as Deputy Chairman of the Motion Picture Industry
Association & the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild. He was appointed
as Hong Kong Affairs Advisor in Beijing; as Member of the Election
Committee for Chief Executive Election and as the Selection
Committee Member for the National People’s Congress of the People’s
Republic of China. He was Board Member for the Hong Kong
Tourism Board in Hong Kong from 2001 to 2007. Mr. Hui was
conferred as Justice of Peace in 2004 and with an Honorary
Fellowship by Lingnan University in 2006.

one of The Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Junior Chamber of Commerce
- 1982 -- awarded
Best Actor by the Hong Kong Film Awards for his performance
in Security Unlimited.
- 1986 -- honoured
with a special tribute by the International Festival of Comedy
Films in Vevey, Switzerland.
- 1989 -- Chicken
& Duck Talk screened at the Cinetex - International Comedy
Film Festival in Las Vegas. Michael was awarded Best Performance
Actor by the American Film Institute.
- 1990 -- honoured
by the Hong Kong Artists' Guild with the Actor of the Year
Award - Screen Group for his performance in Front
Page.
- March 14,
1992 -- presented with proclamation issued by State of Illinois
Governor, Jim Edgar as The Distinguished Film Artist at
the Film Centre of the Art Institute of Chicago for his contributions
in The Magic Touch. The mayor of Chicago,
Richard M. Daley declared "March 14, 1992" to be the "'Michael
Hui Day".
- 1994 --
Always on My Mind was selected as one
of the Best Asian Film of the Year in the Tokyo International
Film Festival of Japan and also one of the Best Five of the
Year in the Hong Kong Film Awards.
- 2010 -- awarded Udine Far East
Film Festival's Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime Achievement,
for his outstanding contribution to Asian comedy.
