On May 1 2011, Michael has been awarded Udine
Far East Film Festival's Golden Mulberry Award for Lifetime
Achievement, for his outstanding contribution to Asian comedy.
The festival praised Hui's brand of Hong Kong comedy brings
together superbly timed verbal humour and choreographed sight
gags, driven by anarchic energy and informed by a strong social
awareness as well as sympathy for the little man, whom he has
often portrayed onscreen.
Upon receiving his award, Hui said, “It's an honour for me to
receive this prize in Udine at a festival with so many film
lovers in attendance. I intend to continue making more comedies
and making the world a better place.” Sabrina Baracetti,
President of the Festival, said of the decision to present this
award to Hui, “It is with great pleasure that we award the
Golden Mulberry for Lifetime Achievement to Michael, whom we
consider to be a giant in Asian comedy. All of us at the Far
East Film Festival are great fans of his work and it is our
honour to feature his films at the Asia Laughs! retrospective,
so that a whole new generation of film lovers can discover his
comic genius.”
Four of Hui's films covering his work as actor, writer, director
and producer (The Warlord, Games Gamblers Play, The Private Eyes
and Chicken and Duck Talk) have been included in Asia Laughs!,
the Udine festival’s retrospective of Asian comedies from the
1920s to the present day that is running alongside the
festival's main programme. The festival closed on May 10.

For those
who wonder .... Mr BOO WHO?
The name "Mr
Boo" has no real meaning in Japanese apart from its funny sound.
It was given to Michael Hui when "The Private Eyes" opened in
Japan back in the early eighties. The hugely successful "Mr
Boo" rapidly became a household name in Japan - even before
Michael realized it himself!!
MICHAEL'S BIO
Born
in Guangzhou, China, Michael aspired to become a politician at a
very young age. After graduation from the Chinese University of
Hong Kong (Sociology Major), Michael then went on to professions
such as highschool teacher, advertising executive before
debuting on the TV screen as a quiz show host and a news anchor.
Michael
found his calling not long after being seen on TV, performing in
the now-legendary Hui Brothers' Show in 1972 (alongside with his
younger brother Samuel Hui) -- to make the audience laugh. His
talent was shown to the fullest in his later-on series of
box-office hits. Michael has
since then transformed the the Hong Kong cinema industry and has
taken it to new heights.
Throughout
his 30-year career, Michael often acts, directs and writes in
many of his movies. Known as "Mr. Boo" in Japan, his
performances have been combinations of wit, humour and wisdom.
Today Michael's movies are being seen and re-seen by Asian and
Chinese audience all over the world.
Michael
now lives on Hong Kong island (a home he resided for more than
30 years). He enjoys fishing, golfing and going to the movies.
